Sarah Schake was the economic development and marketing intern for the City of Fergus Falls from May to August 2018. She was instrumental in the revitalization of the “Forward Fergus Falls” communication and branding strategy.

Originally from St. Francis, MN, Sarah was in the process of getting her business and marketing degree at Winona State University and wanted a summer internship that would provide a professional development opportunity in her chosen marketing field.

She came looking for that opportunity in Fergus Falls because of her cabin connection. Growing up, Sarah spent every weekend of every summer at her family’s cabin in Otter Tail County. “The cabin and Fergus Falls have always been home for me! Saying that I love this city and this community doesn’t capture how special it is to me.”

In addition to Forward Fergus Falls, she was involved in several other economic and community development projects that she said helped her appreciate the City of Fergus Falls’ staff and community members even more than before entering the position. She said her favorite part was “seeing the positive response to the Forward Fergus Falls social media platforms and other Forward Fergus Falls efforts.”

“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to share all the great things happening in Fergus Falls, and I hope that somehow I have helped motivate community members to keep moving FORWARD!”

As part of her internship, Sarah wrote a research paper on the topic of “Mission Drift: How to Establish Core Focus and Values in Businesses” and a reflection paper on her experience with the City of Fergus Falls. Read both here:
